Nagaland MLA Achumbemo Kikon today lamented that we are losing the culture of reading as we have become so dependent on technology.
Addressing the 44th foundation day of All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) cum felicitation of degree toppers in Kohima on August 2, Kikon told the students that what kind of books they read today, will also take them to their future forward.
“It is saddening to see that today only few read. If one does not cultivate habit and interest of reading, there will be a missing link in your education and knowledge,” Kikon asserted while pointing out the need to take up reading daily.
The MLA opined that with the advancement of technology and mobile phones and computer, we have become lazy human beings. “Instead of doing intensive research, we tend to Google for information and satisfy that we know something,” he stressed adding that this is where our society will go wrong.
Kikon pointed out that other western and developed countries have already known technology much ahead of us.
However, for our society it is just few years but due to dependency our people especially students of today's generation have become very lazy and said that unless we read, we will only remain a half cooked society,’ he remarked.
Kikon also told the students that literacy rate has become too high with people qualified with degrees and PhDs but at the same time he also questioned where to place them while adding that it would become very difficult to get employment in the government sector as the number of government employees has reached a saturation point.
He therefore said “our education system to give importance of making students employable and conscious.” Kikon also remarked that students who make academic achievement today will definitely become someone tomorrow. He encouraged the students’ fraternity by challenging them to give back to the society
As toppers, who have come out first among thousand, Kikon opined that “our society, family expects a lot from you and you cannot afford to fail our society.”
He further reminded them that academic achievement does not mean they have achieved everything. Adding that it is a beginning of something important, Kikon said, “What you can expect next is a lot of pressure.”
He advised despite the reality where they will undoubtedly face numerous struggles, the speaker asked them to never give up.
