The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an “Orange” alert for Nagaland and the North-East on May 5, along with forecasting a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across East India from May 5-9. The maximum intensity is expected on May 6 and 7, it informed.

The five-day subdivision-wise weather update issued by the national weather agency on Saturday evening included an ‘orange’ or ‘Be Prepared’ alert for the entire NE on May 5, while the rest of the period from May 6-8 had ‘yellow’ or ‘Be Updated’ alerts.

Specifically, the IMD forecasted a ‘very likely’ chance of fairly widespread to widespread, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected throughout the region from May 5-7, it said. In Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, there is a likelihood of “very heavy rainfall” between May 5-6. The likelihood of “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” was forecasted over Meghalaya on May 6. The IMD attributed the current weather condition, among other factors, to a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and another over Marathwada, as well as a trough running from Meghalaya to the cyclonic circulation over Marathwada in lower tropospheric levels.
