ANCSU takes note of NU’s backlog drawbacks

Dimapur, April 19 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students Union (ANCSU) has pointed out to the Nagaland University what was stated as “many drawbacks” in the working system of the university with the backlog system being the latest issue.

A memorandum from the ANCSU addressed to the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University informed that a press release was issued on March 23, 2007 by professor SK Gupta, professor in-charge of examinations that the provisional result of 1st year BA/BSc./B.Com (honors and general) new course of 2007 has been declared. This was notified to all the affiliated colleges under NU that candidates failing in not more than two subjects may be allowed admission to 2nd year to be later cleared as back-papers in the subsequent examination.

Moreover, an official notification letter was issued to the concern colleges by the prof. in-charge and Deputy Registrar OL Ao basing on the March 23 press release. Students promoted with backlog must be intimidated about their failed papers to facilitate onward preparations. “Contracting on the two points mentioned above, the Nagaland University during its meeting with the principals of concerned colleges on April 12, 2007 resolved not to introduce the backlog system (only when the concerned colleges have already promoted and admitted the students failing in not more than two papers as per he earlier directives by Nagaland university” the ANCSU stated. The union while expressing agreement with the decision taken by NU “because it will directly or indirectly encourage the students to be more sincere in their academics,” took note that the students’ welfare has been affected due to delay over implementation of the decision taken.

The earlier decision and notification had already affected the students, which is totally due to the delay and lack of taking proper decision by Nagaland University on time, it stated. In his regard the ANCSU strongly appealed to the VC to make sure that the students are allowed to proceed as per the earlier directive for a time being, at least for this semester. Even while ‘appealing,’ the ANCSU cautioned that the union would resort to an own course of action.

Also, to avoid unwanted complications and contradictions, the ANCSU requested to at least issue written information to the ANCSU or the Naga Students’ Federation if “your decisions or directives are relating to the academic career of the students.”
