Around 40 to 50 armed miscreants carrying 12 bore guns today attacked a group of villagers at a place between Jalukie Lwa village and Shikto village. According to police reports, one of the villagers was seriously injured when the armed miscreants opened fire indiscriminately. The injured has been shifted to an undisclosed hospital, according to sources. The villagers who were attacked at around 10:30 am in the morning while they were on their way to the fields are all inhabitants of Jalukie Lwa village. The village was only recently inaugurated by Nagaland Home Minister Thenucho.
On hearing of the incident, police from Jalukie immediately rushed to the spot. Later, they went to Shikto village for verification but could not unearth any clue. According to Jalukie Lwa villagers, the suspected miscreants are from ‘a neighbouring village’. They however did not name the village or the reason behind attack.
Jalukie police informed The Morung Express that the acting GB-cum-Pastor of Shikto village and another person were brought to Jalukie police station for questioning. Two 12 bore guns without license were also seized from Shikto village. The GB feigned ignorance on today’s incident. He further informed the police about thatches collected by Shikto villagers being burnt down and suspected the hand of the same miscreants behind today’s attack on Jalukie Lwa villagers.
The police meanwhile are apprehensive of peace prevailing across the region unless the government do something about the proliferation of arms without license.
