The Advisor of Manipuri Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD), arrested in New Delhi on sedition charge last week, brought to Imphal by a team of Manipur police on Tuesday, got bail. Thokchom Veewon was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal East later this evening where he secured a conditional bail release.
He was produced in the court of Imphal East CJM later this evening, reportedly as per a directive of the Delhi High Court, the same court that dismissed Thokchom’s plea challenging his arrest and transit remand in New Delhi. The CJM released him on “conditional bail” with a surety amount of Rs 30,000, a police source said.
Earlier, Thokchom was taken to Imphal East district police where the case against him was .lodged at Lamlai police station of the district under a tight security measure. While coming out of the Imphal Airport, police denied Thokchom from meeting with media persons who were among the large number of people, mostly student activists, his family and relatives.
Thokchom was brought to Imphal after a court in south Delhi's Saket issued a remand for his transit to Manipur, directing the police to take him to the Imphal court on or before February 19. A student of Ambedkar University, Thokchom was the president of MSAD, and now working as adviser of the student body.
He was arrested on February 15 by a team of Manipur Police with the help of Delhi Police and charged with sedition for a post on Facebook on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. State police had alleged that Veewon was arrested for uploading and spreading messages which could create hatred, communal disharmony and communal riot, on social media regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
