“As cool as sheep”

Lesly Lobeni

The thought of being an old fashioned lady or a gentleman doesn’t seem very appreciable today. More than being an inspiration, we find time to laugh at those that follow such deeds. The little manners of saying a ‘please’ and a ‘thank you’ has long disappeared from our vocabulary. Most importantly, respect for others and oneself has been completely flung out the window. What iniquities seem to have befallen us that we have simply lost all of our moral conducts? Is it just the way of following the world or is this a pattern of some ulterior universal secret we are meant to follow? Marc Anthony cited the thought of Shakespeare through one of the most famous speeches: ‘The evil that men do lives on but the good is oft inert’. Indeed, this is a common truth. The value of goodness and kindness has long been taken over by their contrary counterpart and this is a little message to the youth that Nagaland is seemingly resting its hope on.

While the economy of the world is in bedlam and the planet continues to perish, we have created a little world of our own where no problems from the big bad world seem to faze us. Our only problems remain here and now about the most futile issues. There is no more expectation of what the future will bring; no more dreams and ambition to reach for the future. No. These days, such serious talks are deemed as being just too ‘un-cool’. To prove ones self is cast off as a simple ‘whatever’.

It is evident that we, the youth, are only interested in fun. Everyday seems to be one big party and everyone is invited to this madhouse where even the impossible occurs. What moral codes that had been set by our parents are all but banished from our thoughts. We feel grown up and independent. We say we need no ones help in this world because we have made it ours for the taking. But how dare we even come to such conclusions when we have forgotten to even distinguish between what’s right and wrong? How can we look right into the mirror at ourselves knowing the selfishness and hypocrisy we harbour? We are indeed rebels without a cause.

I converse straight up with no bends to one and all because I have been there, done that and seen it all. My final conclusion is that life is much more than this. Life is much more than wearing that dazzling and stylish outfit to a party so you can wow the rest. Life is much more than getting drunk and doing your other needful and making fools of yourself. Life is much more than sneaking around and ‘borrowing’ dad’s car late at night to go for a ride. Yes, its fun and something’s we need a doze of the extremities but to let it become a daily affair… Does it seem right? Imagine yourself at 30, without a purpose and direction. Would you still be the ‘I-don’t-give-a-damn’ persona? How does it feel to have the world talking behind your back put still putting up the ‘you’re-my-best-friend’ façade? It’s fake and you hurt. Its wrong but you go ahead and do it too. That’s the vicious cycle of the world we seem exist in today. Although there is always a choice, we tend to get pulled into this super massive black hole anyway.

With this I depart and mean no offence. I simply state the things I see. So I wish you well and I wish you the best. Do it for yourself if not for the rest. So think. And think it well and hard about this world, this land, the future and you. Will you strive to change and take the lead or will you remain an effortless blind sheep?
