For Asewe Letro from Mezhür Higher Secondary School Kohima, who secured the Top 2 rank in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination with 98.17%, this success is an accumulation of daily efforts ever since he started learning at the primary level.

“I am very thankful to my pre-school teachers at Merry Tots for building a strong foundation for me and also my teachers in my school for encouraging me all the time and helping me in whatever way possible; my family and church for their support and prayers, and above everything, I want to give my thanks to God, without whom I would not have got this rank,” he told The Morung Express.

Asewe Letro who hails from Leshemi village under Phek district believed he did his examinations well but did not expect the kind of marks he secured. “I am really surprised with the result,” he said. Prior to the examination, he studied for about 8 hours on a usual basis. But during the exams, he said, “I wanted to push myself beyond limits and even studied up to 12 hours.”

He said, it may sound cliché, but “behind this small achievement, was a lot of hard work, determination, perseverance, and consistency.” He also made the best use of the lockdown last year to focus on his studies.

Letro does not have a favourite subject but likes everything he studies. With varied interests that range from music (he has written rap songs) to fashion, he expressed that “I have a deep passion in fashion, and so, it will be really nice if I can establish myself in the fashion industry.”

However, his bigger goal is to go for civil services. “I’d like to appear for UPSC because I have great interest in government and politics,” Letro shared.

“Right now, my plan is to keep achieving whatever I can,” he also said, while adding, “I really hope I can achieve big things and bring glory to God.”

Asewe Letro shared that he is going to take up Arts and further shared his dream of attending Harvard University someday—“If it is in God’s will, I am trying.”
