Closes markets in containment zones
Kohima, July 16 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS, has issued an order declaring containment measures following the confirmation of an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in parts of Kohima district.
According to the order, laboratory test reports received from the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, confirmed the presence of ASF at Peducha Village, Phezoucha L Khel and P Khel of Kohima Village, and the Razha area near Dzü-ü River (NH-29).
To contain the spread of the disease, a 1-km radius from the infected premises has been declared as the Infected Zone, while a 10-km radius has been notified as the Surveillance Zone.
The DC has imposed an immediate ban on the import, export and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the infected and surveillance zones. “All pork meat markets and butchery shops within the designated zones have also been ordered to remain closed until further notice.”
Pig farmers have been directed to restrict visitors to their farms, disinfect farm premises regularly, and immediately report any unusual illness or death of pigs to the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services. The order also mandates the safe burial of pig carcasses in accordance with official protocols, while prohibiting the dumping of carcasses in rivers, water bodies or open areas.
The public has been advised to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing or consuming meat from unknown or unverified sources.
The order warned that any violation of the directives will invite legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other applicable laws. The directives came into force with immediate effect.
