The ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) football league was held at the Futsal of Kawoto Village, Zunheboto, on Saturday, providing young girls a platform to showcase their football skills under the ‘Sports for Women’ initiative of the Khelo India Scheme.

The tournament featured eight teams of girls under 13 years, including school and club teams from Zunheboto Town, Sumi Baptist Church, and Satakha. FC Satakha emerged as the winner, while Sacredian of Sacred Heart School finished runners-up.

The league, organised by the Zunheboto District Football Association (ZDFA) under the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), aimed to promote football development at the grassroots level. The Sports Authority of India (SAI), All India Football Federation (AIFF), and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports supported the initiative, which is being implemented across 26 States and Union Territories.

ZDFA General Secretary Tavinto K Sumi encouraged players to excel in both football and education, highlighting that talented players would have opportunities to progress to district, state, national, and international levels. He also stressed the importance of parents supporting their children’s sports participation alongside academics.

ZDFA President Inoka Yepthomi said the league complements earlier initiatives such as the Blue Cubs League for children aged 6 to 8 years, aimed at promoting football from a young age. Senior Vice President of NFA, Kiyeka S Sumi, said early engagement in football would help children develop their skills and pursue professional opportunities in the sport, inspiring future generations in Nagaland and India.

Medical support for the event was provided by the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) and Mobile Medical Team. Coaches, teachers, and association members attended the program, which also included a prayer by Newtoli Chophy of the Zunheboto Town Sumi Baptist Church.

ZDFA expressed gratitude to SAI, AIFF, and NFA for supporting the organisation of the event in Zunheboto.
