Assam, Meghalaya, and 7 other states get new governors

Governor of Assam given additional charge of Manipur

New Delhi, July 28 (MExN): President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday appointed new governors to nine states, including four states in the North-East.

The appointments include Lakshman Prasad Acharya as the Governor of Assam, who was previously serving as the Governor of Sikkim. Acharya was also given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur, a state gripped by violence for over a year. He replaced Anusuiya Uikey, who was Manipur’s Governor from February 2023.

Meanwhile, Om Prakash Mathur was appointed as Governor of Sikkim. CH Vijayashankar was appointed as Governor of Meghalaya, and Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde is the new Governor of Rajasthan. Jishnu Dev Varma and Ramen Deka were also appointed as Governors of Telangana and Chhattisgarh, respectively.

Former Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, was given the charge of Jharkhand, replacing CP Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan, who was Governor of Jharkhand with additional charge of Telangana, was appointed as Governor of Maharashtra.

The incumbent Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria, was appointed as Governor of Punjab and has also been appointed as Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This appointment was made after the President of India accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT of Chandigarh.

The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices, stated a communiqué issued by the President's Secretariat on Sunday. In another statement, it was informed that K Kailashnathan was appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.
