Assam Police seize drugs worth Rs 7 crore transported from Manipur, woman arrested

Guwahati, September 1 (IANS): Assam Police seized narcotic substances worth Rs 7 crore in Cachar district and arrested a woman on charges of drug peddling, an official said on Friday, adding that the consignment was being transported from Manipur.

Talking to IANS, Superintendent of Police in Cachar district, Numal Mahatta, said the consignment of drugs was transported from Churachandpur district of Manipur.

"Based on secret information, a police team conducted a special operation against the transportation of narcotic substances at Labok Village in the district. While police conducted a raid in the house of a 38-year-old woman, Meena Kumari Sarma, drugs hidden in 100 soap boxes were recovered," the officer mentioned.

A total of 1.30 kg of narcotic substances suspected to be heroin were seized by the police following which Meena Kumari Sarma was also arrested.

"The international market value of the seized drugs must be around Rs 7 crore," Mahatta claimed.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the efforts of state police and posted on X, "Based on reliable information, Cachar police conducted a special operation & arrested one accused and recovered 100 soap boxes of suspected heroin weighing 1.3 kg worth Rs 7 cr from her residence. The heroin was illegally transported from a neighbouring State."
