DIMAPUR, JANUARY 13 (MExN): It has been quite sometime since anyone has used the T word in this part of the world, except for those times when there were very bitter media wars among factions. Now the leading Para Military force is using the tag ‘terrorist’ after quite a lull.
“Troops of 28 Assam Rifles and 5 Assam Rifles under HQ IGAR (South) launched joint operation in the general area (Khongsai) and apprehended two UTLA terrorists from the area on January,” stated a defence release today. They were identified as K Khongsai, 30 yrs, s/o Late J Khongsai r/o Khongsai – I and Ngamkholal Singson, 50yrs, s/o Late N Singson, r/o New Langulen.
The apprehendees were handed over to Porompat Police station, the release stated. This is a result of a sustained effort on their part to maintain the relative peace in the whole region, as evident from the recent Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) which showed a sharp decline in insurgency related deaths.
However, it is also well known that the para-military also engages in operations that are aimed at ‘winning the hearts and minds of the people’. These ‘operations’, some of them very Christian sounding ones such as ‘Operation Good Samaritan’ have drawn flak from certain quarters. They have quite successfully expanded their writ by using their slogan “Friends of the Hill People” using initiatives such as orphanages, bulldozers, medical camps and excursions.
However, activists have questioned the motives behind such moves and accused the Assam Rifles and other security agencies of having ulterior designs. Meanwhile, the release also stated 29 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) launched operation along NH-39 and apprehended a “suspicious boy” from a Maruti van Regn No. MN 01 W6050 at around 10 am today at Sita track Jn.
On questioning, it was found that he was newly recruited into UNPC outfit and being taken away for training,it claimed. Individual identified as Athem, 16 yrs, s/o Ashi, r/o Bakwa, Noney, Dist-Tamenglong. The individual was released to his parents through Tegnoupal Police station as a good will and humane gesture, the release added.
