The 25th biennial general conference of the Angami Student’s Union (ASU) entered the second day today here under the theme ‘Embracing a new thinking.’ It will go on till April 21.
“As a guardian of the state capital, and more importantly, as a big brother of the Tenyimia brethrens, I believe that people have high expectation on Angami youths to be role model in embracing new thinking and exhibit the best form of peace and progress of the state,” said minister for planning & coordination, evaluation and geology & mining, TR Zeliang while gracing the inaugural function as the chief guest. Stating that Angamis have a better opportunity from enterprises to education and from individual life style to social life, the minister said they must be able to make use of the new thinking and set an example.
Chief minister Neiphiu Rio also penned in the ASU souvenir that “In the fast paged society and the ever changing world of today, one had to keep on moving and changing, in order to survive, and to be a productive member of the society. It is also necessary that the forward movement and the changes processes are directed by a vision and new thinking so as to make them purposeful and meaningful. Otherwise, we will be like a rudderless boat, being tossed around by the currents of the ocean.”
Exhorting the gathering, Angami Public Organization (APO) president K. Neingunyu Sekhose challenged the students to have courage to put aside “Our fears, our prejudices” and be open to new ideas and changes, adding that it is only through occasion like these such issues can be collectively discussed and acted upon. “With the world progressing at such a rapid pace and new technologies and ideas being floated everyday we are now at a stage where we either progress with the rest of stay stagnant for the rest of our lives,” he challenged the students.
Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Kelhouneizo Yhome in his speech expressed the hope the ASU will adopt a comprehensive strategy to usher a new outlook to march towards excellence, particularly in the field of quality education. He also extended invitation to one and all to the forthcoming 25th general conference of the NSF starting from April 24-27 at Diphupar village, Dimapur. In his presidential address, ASU president Voto Neikha challenged the students to give a collective effort and new thinking and new vision to bring change in the society. Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) president Zadehol Rikha also shared greeting message. Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu, parliamentary secretary for housing (NPWD) and treasuries & account, C.L. John, parliamentary secretary for rural development, Namri Nchang, chairman Nagaland Handloom & Handicraft and chairman Peren DPDB, Rothihu Tetseo, SP Kohima and several other dignitaries also present at the inaugural function.
The inaugural function was followed by debate competition on the topic “The present education system provides prospective career opportunities both in government and private sectors,” extempore speech competition, business hour and wrestling. Dr. Kedilezo Kikhi, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Sociology, Tezpur (Central) University, Assam acted as the speaker of the academic session. He spoke on the topic “Prospects based academic pursuance and its impact on society.”
