Asungba of DPC retains badminton singles title

Guwahati, May 21 (MExN): Defending champion, Asungba Jamir of Dimapur Press Club retained the singles title in badminton at the ongoing Airtel Northeast Media Sports Festival being organized by the Assam Sports Journalists Association. Jamir defeated Rajiv Kalita of Protidin Group 21-15 in the finals played on Friday, May 20. It was a single set event.   The defending champion maintaining his winning streak had crushed Rituraj Konwar in the semi-finals 21-14 to set up the title clash. In the finals, Asungba led the strike from the word ‘go’. The experienced player from Assam, Rajiv struggled to receive the overhead smashes from Asungba and finally conceded defeat.
In the team event, Bikramjeet Singh and Ibobi of Manipur Working Journalist Association defeated Rajiv Kalita and Biswajit of Protidin Goup two sets to one to win the title. Earlier, the duo from Protidin Group defeated Dimapur Press Club in the semifinals 2-1. The Manipur team defeated Janambhoomi Publications to reach the finals. In chess, defending champion, Surjya Lahiri retained the title with 5 points while Imtiyaz Ahmed and Medomoli were 1st and 2nd runners-up with 5 and 4.5 points respectively. On Saturday, there would be team event and Open Table Tennis Championships.
