Dimapur, May 13 (MExN): ATMA-Dimapur Kuhuboto Block conducted training cum demonstration on ‘Management & Control of diseases in Pigs’ and demonstration on ‘Castration of Piglets’ held at Khughovi Village on May 10. Resource person for the programme was Temsu Jamir, Supervisor, Veterinary Department.
Temsu firstly highlighted the importance of pig farming where rearing of pigs is a suitable option for small and landless farmers, farm women etc. He also illustrated that with the growing demand by the consumers, the local production is unable to meet the huge domestic demand in livestock sector and so there is heavy importation of livestock and its products into the state from elsewhere. He further elaborated on the management and merits of pig farming, where it is the most accommodative of farm animals. They can be managed in many different ways, can be brought on and sold off at any stages of life and they can thrive well on low cost building and equipments. He also emphasis on the health management for the control of diseases in pigs. Worm infestation which is a common problem in all livestock farming should be treated in the early 3 months of age by deworming method. Stress is also one of the major problems faced by the pigs. Stress may be due to poor nutrition, improper housing, overcrowding and extreme climatic conditions. Stress therefore, may directly affect the growth, productivity and reproductive performance in pigs. He also spoke on the advantages and drawbacks of castration. Castrated animals are less aggressive and exhibit less mounting behaviour that males left intact. Castrated males do not exhibit boar taint and allows faster growth of male pigs. The programme concluded by a live demonstration of castration of piglets. Earlier the programme was chaired by Mr. Yimobendang, ATM (ATMA), Kuhuboto Block.
