The 7thEastern Sumi Students’ Union Football Running Trophy came to a thrilling conclusion on January 15 after nine days of intense competition. Aghunato Town Students’ Union (A) emerged victorious, claiming the championship title by defeating defending champion Satami Students’ Union 3-2 in the final match.
The tournament held from January 7-15 brought together 24 teams from 19 villages, showcasing exceptional sportsmanship, camaraderie, and a passion for football, a press release issued by the ESSU stated.
The inaugural session of the tournament was graced by G. Ikuto Zhimomi, MLA and Advisor for Land Resource Department, who emphasized the importance of sports in promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork among youth. Zhimomi encouraged participants to demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship, respect their opponents, and strive for excellence highlighting the significance of education in shaping future leaders and stressed the need to nurture young talent.
The closing ceremony featured N. Hetoi Yeptho, Deputy Director, Textiles Design and Training Center in Dimapur, Nagaland, who highlighted the vital role sports play in our lives. He accentuated that sports are essential for physical and mental well-being, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills.
Yeptho also shared the inspiring story of Late Zukhevi from Aghunato Area, who pursued his passion for football despite being a government servant and yet served as the captain of the Nagaland Football team encouraging everyone to explore their passions and pursue excellence in their chosen fields, regardless of their profession or background.
At the closing ceremony, Inito Yeptho, President, Eastern Sumi Students’ Union expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed towards the tournament’s success.
