Nagaland Minister for Rural Development & SIRD, Metsubo Jamir, stated on Thursday that the pursuit of knowledge and education by students today should not be a futile exercise, but rather a means to apply it practically.

Addressing the day-2 of the Asangma Shisashir Telongjem/Students’ Union (AST) Platinum Jubilee celebration held at Asangma village on December 19, he advised the student community to strive in becoming a leader in their own capacity.

He noted that the life of a student today is highly competitive, whether in academics, sports, or other related activities.

With this in mind, Jamir encouraged students to consistently strive for excellence and remain passionate in pursuing their goals.

In the development of a youth and most importantly a student, he underscored  that leadership skills need to be inculcated at this stage in their life.

“In few years’ time you will be the ones leading your community and society,” he reminded.  “You have a lot of responsibilities ahead, on how to help carry forth your village, community and state.”

However, the Minister clarified that this does not mean adopting a "tribalistic" mindset, but rather being fair, impartial, and living in harmony with others.

To this end, he urged the students to have a vision for what holds in the future and seek wisdom and understanding from their elders.

Jamir further advised the students not to view a job merely as a means of survival, but to cultivate ambition for what they can contribute to society.

He extended his greetings and appreciation to the AST and its pioneers for marking 75 years of formation as a well-established student body.

Considering the occasion as a day of remembering the blessings bestowed upon them, the Minister also announced that he will be contributing funds toward the redevelopment of the village’s old football ground and also to assist in sponsoring free coaching classes for the students.

Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A Pangjung Jamir was also in attendance as the Jubilee host. The Advisor had earlier graced the occasion as the inaugural guest of the jubilee celebration on Wednesday night.

The Presidential address was given by Moalong Lemtur, AST President while a short message was shared by I Kilang Jamir, Chairman of Asangma Village Council.  Speeches were also delivered by Lanutoshi Aier, President of Ao Kaketshi Mungdang (Ao Students’ Conference) and Imlinok, President of Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang.

Established in 1949, the AST Platinum Jubilee celebration is being held from December 18-20.
