Awareness and capacity building on medical plants

Dimapur, February 21 (MExN): The capacity building on medical plants and awareness of the indigenous ecological knowledge programme, organised by the forest department at the State Environment and Forestry Training Institute, Dimapur was held on February 15.

Rongsenwati IFS, chairman NPCB (former PCF) emphasized the value of indigenous ecological knowledge in a holistic approach and about the patenting while Dr. Sashidhar IFS, additional PCF and CWW had deliberated on indigenous ecological knowledge of local communities (MP) and its uses that are an important area that can be explored judiciously to improve the living condition of the people.

Dhamandra Prakesh, CF (RPU) who chaired the seminar, deliberated on an overview on medicinal plant in the global context to that of our State. Nagaland is endowed with the best geographical location abounded with the rich biodiversity, has a vast potential for judicious exploration and utilization of natural resources. We have to know that our land is a ‘Storehouse’ of traditional indigenous ecological knowledge for the simple reason that more than 20 distinct dialects, culture, food, habitat, lifestyles, customs and rituals is an added to the hotspot biodiversity, he added.

Temjenyapang IFS, silviculturist while giving clear picture on the scope and opportunities of medicinal plant, said that the potential in exploration and conservation of medicinal plant wealth has many ways been linked to the exclusive usage and preservation. Medicinal plants generate employment and improve the economic to the people, he said.

Limasenba, research scholar presented his assessment on the works done in medicinal plants conservation area in Nagaland. The seminar was attended by secretary, NPCB, forest officials, representative of students’ union and VDBs. Each traditional local medicinal plant expert displayed their local products out of wild herbal exhibits, and shared their vast experiences on indigenous medicinal plants.

It may be mentioned that the objective or gaining this programme was to create awareness on medicinal plants and the importance of indigenous ecological knowledge. Many medicines be it allopathic, homeopathic, Ayurvedic etc. are originated from wild plants ands many are produced synthetically for which vision on health through medicinal plant in aimed at. Of late, herbal medicinal plants are luring and gaining people heart because of its non-toxic nature. The herbal medicinal plant is gaining its popularity and preferred to chemicals which is widely accepted. The renowned organic food is much sought to than that of inorganic food.

For centuries, medical plant is used in training and preventing diseases. The most species of medicinal plant are non-toxic, very few toxic and less serious side-effects. Rural and tribals have easy aces to local medicinal plant and practices.
