
Kiphire, July 20 (MExN): KVK (ICAR) and DAO, Kiphire jointly organised one-day farmers’ awareness programme on Fall Armyworm (FAW) and Agro Advisory services at Langkok village, Kiphire on July 9.
During the technical session Dr N Khumdemo Ezung, Senior Scientist and Head (I/C) KVK, Kiphire discussed in detail about the history and origin of the FAW, life cycle management strategies. He informed that there are four approaches to its control which included biological, mechanical, cultural and chemical methods which need to be adopted for the complete eradication of the pest but emphasised on cultural, mechanical and bio control methods and added that chemical control is to be adopted when all the other three methods fail.
A technical lecture on scientific method of rearing pig and poultry was delivered by Dr. Tsilise Sangtam, Deputy Director, Chief Veterinary Office Kiphire where he emphasised on timely vaccination for prevention of diseases. He also informed about the suitability of animals to be reared depending on the agro climatic condition of the areas and encouraged the farmers to rear only those animals that have been identified for the specific area.
Setsiba Sangtam AFA (DAO), Kiphire appealing on behalf of the DAO, requested the farmers to upgrade and inform on time about the various incidence of pest and diseases being faced in the farm so as to prevent it from becoming a major problem.
Temjenna Jamir SMS (Agro meteorology) of district Agromet unit (DAMU), KVK Kiphire highlighted about the importance of climate that is influencing their farming activities and requested for registration of their phone numbers to avail message on agro advisories through sms which will help them to take precautionary measures for their farming activities.
The programme was concluded with the distribution of new breed of poultry, suinidi and vanaraja, insecticide sprayers and chlorpynphos to the farmers. A total of 83 farmers attended the programme. Earlier the programme was chaired by Dr. N. Khumdemo Ezung.
