‘Backward’ tag might soon be made obsolete: Rio

Delhi Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union celebrates 26th freshers’ cum annual meet

Dimapur, November 6 (MExN): Addressing the Delhi Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union (DENSU) 26th freshers’ cum annual meet Neiphiu Rio, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha expressed hope that in this day and age when “Right is Might”, the ‘backward’ tag attributed to the Eastern Nagas might soon be made obsolete.

Speaking at the event held on November 4 at Nagaland House, New Delhi, the chief guest also observed that instead of “rush(ing) back home and quarrel (ing) over what is not available”, Nagas would do well to stay back and grab the universe of opportunities that metropolitan cities like Delhi can provide.

He appealed to the gathering not to betray the trust of their parents back home. He encouraged the students to pursue modernisation and not merely westernisation; adding that it is extremely important to remain rooted to one’s identity all the time.

A press release issued by Kuolie Mere, PRO, Nagaland House, New Delhi said that Meren Chenth, Deputy Commandant, 7th NAP, exhorted the students to break free from the stereotypes through determination and discipline, and advised them to “think right, study right, and live right”.

In his welcome address, Lamsong Khiamniungan, President, DENSU, acknowledged the father-figure role that the chief guest has been playing for the Nagas and expressed his gratitude for the positive response to the invitation. He also urged the members to remain true the purpose for which they had travelled more than 2000 kilometres away from home.

The event saw the introduction of the freshers, presentation of songs, and exhibition of colourful tradition traditional attires. Eche Wangnyu, Vice President, DENSU, pronounced the vote of thanks and the programme concluded with a benediction by Loipong, Treasurer cum Advisor, DENSU.

It was attended by a host of dignitaries including Cabinet Minister Kipili Sangtam, Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, Imtilemba Sangtam, Kejong Chang and Adviser CM Chang, invitees, well wisher, members, and freshers.
