Kohima, March 2 (MExN): A Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Effective Teaching Strategies” was organised today at Baptist College Kohima. In the first session, Thong threw light on “Inclusive Teaching Practices” focussing on the need of mainstreaming children with intellectual disabilities, inclusive and exclusive practice, strategies for Inclusive education and role of teachers.
Alluding to examples of inclusion, Thong pointed out that segregation and integration is not inclusion and does not do much for disabled learners in mainstream education.
Talking of inclusive practice, Thong pointed out that education is truly inclusive only when it actually benefits all learners. He mentioned that inclusiveness also means accommodation of regular children, special children and economically challenged students.
Speaking of barriers to inclusive education, Thong asserted that policies which do not promote inclusiveness should be done away with.
He pointed out that inclusion in various institutions is very important for promotion of empathy.
Talking of teaching strategies, he pointed out that teachers ought to teach in a way that the student understands and not as the teacher understands.
