Beekeeping a serious business

Kohima | January 22 : The Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) was launched in 2007-08 with a view to harness the rich potential of beekeeping in the state.
The main objective of the Mission to popularize, promote and develop beekeeping and honey development in the state to fulfill the economic, social and environmental objectives.
For this a three pronged strategy has been adopted by the mission namely, awareness creation, training for capacity building and skill upgradation, survey and research studies and apiculture development and promotion including industry services and marketing.
The Mission is manned by 12 team members and few supporting staff headed by Mission director and team leader, who are drawn from various line departments, according to the annual administrative report of the land resources development.
During 2009-10, the mission has taken up various activities. Twenty sensitization programme were conducted at different blocks on the importance of bees, beekeeping and honey involving about 2000 people drawn from churches, NGOs, women, farmers, students etc.
Five team members along with five field staff of the department of land resources attended a  week training course on modern beekeeping at Doraha, Ludhiana, Punjab in the month of November 2009.
Sixteen training programmes were conducted on capacity building and skill upgradation to tribal honey gatherers at different locations of Kohima and Dimapur district in collaboration with TRIFED, Ministry of Tribal Affairs Government of India including 500 beekeepers.
Three-day basic training programme on scientific beekeeping was conducted in 40 villages involving about 1500 beekeepers.
Ten training programme were conducted to Rock Bee Honey harvesters under Pungro block, Kiphire in collaboration with Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, Mumbai involving 150 hunters.
Three team members attended 11 day courses on AGMARK Certification at Regional AGMARK Laboratory, Kolkatta in the month of April 2009.
Five numbers of inter district exposure visits were organized on beekeeping in the state.
Team members alongwith other state officials took part in 41st Apimondia International Beekeeping Congress at Montpellier, France from September 15 to 20.
Put up 40 nos, of hoardings at strategic locations in the state for creating awareness to the people on the importance of bees, beekeeping and honey.
Participated in Tableau exhibitions during the Republic Day celebration on January 26, 2010 bagged the Governor Running Trophy for excellence. Further Bi- yearly newsletter “Api News” being published.
