Maligaon, August 23 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) commissioned 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity between January and July this year, the highest among all zonal railways of Indian Railways, taking its total installed solar capacity to 42.1 MWp.
In a statement, the NFR said the solar capacity has been developed across its divisions and units as part of its efforts to promote green energy and sustainable railway operations. Its solarisation initiative was launched in 2011.
Lumding Division, including the Guwahati portion, has the highest cumulative solar installation at 17.7 MWp, followed by Rangiya Division with 9.6 MWp. Alipurduar, Katihar and Tinsukia divisions have also contributed to the expansion.
During 2025-26, NFR generated around 114 lakh units of solar power, resulting in savings of approximately Rs 8.6 crore. This was an increase of about 90 per cent in generation and 95.45 per cent in savings compared to 2024-25, when around 60 lakh units were generated, saving approximately Rs 4.4 crore.
NFR currently has another 9 MWp of solar capacity under various stages of implementation. Major installations are planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar divisions.
The railway said the initiatives would help reduce carbon emissions, conserve the environment and lower energy costs while contributing to Indian Railways' goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter.
