Kiphire, September 2 (MExN): Nagaland Health Project (NHP) with support from the Chief Medical Officer’s office, Kiphire, conducted district level refreshers training on implementation of bio-medical waste management (BMWM) for all health facilities under Kiphire on August 30 at District Hospital, Kiphire.

The training was imparted to orient health workers about managing bio-medical waste in their respective health centres, according to a press release from the District Media Officer, CMO Office Kiphire Haichikambe Pame.

As per the release, in her opening remarks, Dr R Chubala Aier, CMO, highlighted about bio-medical waste management, wherein, she called on all the participants to get well versed about managing biomedical waste and asked them to teach the same to other health workers in their respective health units. She also asked them to put whatever they learn during the training into practice every day.

Zitilong Sangtam, (DF, NHP) and resource person presented the training objectives and overview, during which he said the training will the focus on importance of BMWM, how it is carried out, rules and regulation under BMWM, and use of PPE, among others.

Meanwhile, Chenosin Yim, DPM, Quality Assurance, and resource person oriented the trainees on segregation, collection, handling, storage, and transportation of biomedical wastes and mentioned various BMWM treatments and disposal technologies, according to the release.

Further, she spoke on who should segregate biomedical waste, when to segregate biomedical waste, and the reason for segregation, treatment, and disposal of biomedical waste, along discussions on the function of different colour coded waste bins in health facilities.

Similarly, the importance of personal protection and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while handling biomedical waste was emphasised by Dr Sikukhiumew Torechu, MO, the release stated.

It may be mentioned that group work on how to use colour coded waste bins was also held, during which, the trainees were divided into four groups who gave their presentations, it added.
