BJP accuses MLA for breach of model code of conduct

DIMAPUR, MAY 24 (MExN): The BJP of 13th A/C Puhoboto Electoral District has accused the sitting MLA of 13th Pughoboto A/C for breach of the model code of conduct of the Election Commission of India.

In a letter of complaint addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, BJP 13th A/C Puhoboto Electoral District president, K. Inaho Hetho stated that on April 20, 2018, the Directorate of Information and Public Relation (DIPR) informed via the local dailies that a tree plantation week would be observed in Pughoboto sub-division during May 14-19, 2018 under the Local Area Development Programme (LAPD).

As previously notified, the said programme was carried out on the scheduled date in spite of the enforcement of the model code of conduct. With officers from various departments and all government employees under Pughoboto sub-division made to compulsorily attend the program.

Then, on the pretext of the tree plantation programme, the BJP alleged that the sitting MLA visited all polling stations in Pughoboto A/C and even went to the extent of house–to- house visitation appealing for votes.

It also alleged that a program was organized in each polling station under 13 Pughoboto A/C whereby, the platform was exploited by the sitting MLA to “fire tirade of accusations against PDA government” as being “Hindutva.”

In this connection, the BJP has pointed out that seeking votes along communal lines is a clear violation of the model code of conduct and punishable under section 153A of the Indian Panel Code.

That, executing government sponsored schemes like LAPD during the enforcement of the model code of conduct is a serious offence and clear violation of the ECI’s order on Code of Conduct-Do’s and Don’ts (on welfare schemes and governmental works) vide letter No. 964/INST/2007-PLN-I , dated 7.01.07, it also reminded.

It has therefore urged that CEO to initiate appropriate action against the violator (s) as per the law.
