KOHIMA, DECEMBER 20 (MExN): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nagaland, has strongly condemned the "reprehensible behaviour" of Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, towards Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak.
In a press release issued today, the state BJP described the incident as not only an affront to Konyak’s personal dignity but also an insult to the people of Nagaland whom she represents.
The BJP statement criticized Gandhi's actions as a "blatant violation of Parliamentary decorum" and an attack on the respect and safety that every woman, particularly elected representatives, deserves. "Such behaviour is unbecoming of Rahul Gandhi as an elected representative and goes against the principles of non-violence and respect upheld by our democracy," the release stated.
The party further claimed that this incident highlights the Congress Party's "deep-seated disregard" for the rights and dignity of women, as well as for elected representatives from the Northeast. "It is a stark indication of the animosity that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party hold towards the Hon’ble MPs of the BJP," the BJP Nagaland added.
In light of the incident, the BJP Nagaland expressed its solidarity with MP Phangnon and wished a speedy recovery to the two BJP MPs who were injured during the altercation.
The party demanded an "immediate and unconditional apology" from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party, urging authorities to take stringent action against such misconduct to ensure that the sanctity of the country’s highest democratic institutions is maintained. The BJP also emphasized that no member, especially women, should feel threatened or disrespected within the precincts of Parliament.
Further, BJP Nagaland State called upon all right-thinking citizens to condemn such act and stand united against any form of intimidation or disrespect towards women and elected representatives perpetrated by so-called leaders suffering from emotional instability.
