The BJP and NPF will sit out the upcoming bye-election to the vacant 58 Shamator-Chessore Assembly Constituency scheduled on October 30. The bye-poll was necessitated following the demise of former MLA and Advisor to the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), SCERT and Village Guards, Toshi Wungtung on July 1, 2021.

Both the parties, which are members of the recently formed ‘opposition-less’ United Democratic Alliance, made the announcement today in Kohima.

The NPF decision to opt out was decided at an “emergency meeting” on October 5, which was confirmed to The Morung Express by party Secretary General, Achumbemo Kikon. A copy of the ‘Resolution’ adopted today stated that the NPF Working Committee unanimously resolved to support the candidate set up by foe turned ally- NDPP.

It stated, “The Working Committee after thorough deliberation on the request letter of the NDPP dated 30th September 2021, appealing the party not to set up candidate in the ensuing Bye-election to the 58-Shamator-Chessore Assembly Constituency… decided to extend its support to the NDPP Candidate.”

NPF loyalist Rukkimong was in the running for the vacant seat. As per the resolution, Rukkimong agreed to abide by the party decision.

The BJP did not issue a written statement but the party’s senior legislator, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton told journalists in Kohima that the BJP will support the candidate fielded by the NDPP.

“Since BJP and NDPP were alliance since 2018, we will go as per our seat sharing, so we will not disturb NDPP candidate. We will support their candidate,” he said.

As for the Congress, it was still to list a name. A state Congress leader told this newspaper that the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee leadership will be holding a press conference in Kohima on October 6. The party will announce a decision at the press conference, he informed.

The last date of nomination to the bye-election, as announced by the Election Commission of India, is October 8.
