The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wokha District Unit, Nagaland, organised a district-level seminar as part of the Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar Samman Abhiyan at the BJP District Office, Wokha on April 24. The event aimed to commemorate the contributions of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, also revered as the Father of the Indian Constitution.

The seminar featured the Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland and BJP Legislature Party Leader, Yanthungo Patton, as the guest speaker.
In his address, Patton paid rich tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s unparalleled role in shaping modern India. He described Dr Ambedkar as a distinguished jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer, who fought relentlessly against caste-based discrimination and worked for the upliftment of the Dalit community.

He also highlighted the political challenges faced by Dr Ambedkar during his lifetime, particularly under Congress regimes. He spoke of how Dr Ambedkar was consistently marginalised and excluded from key decision-making roles, including being sidelined from crucial cabinet committees during his tenure as a minister under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He further recounted how Dr Ambedkar’s resignation from the cabinet stemmed from deep frustration over the neglect of Dalit issues and unfulfilled promises made by the Congress leadership.

Patton also emphasised the respectful recognition accorded to Dr Ambedkar under non-Congress governments. He noted that it was only in 1990, under the leadership of Prime Minister VP Singh and with BJP support, that Dr Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. Under the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts such as the establishment of the five “Panchteerth” sites, the laying of the foundation stone of his memorial in 2016, and its inauguration in 2018, demonstrate BJP’s unwavering commitment to honouring Ambedkar’s legacy.

During the programme, the Dy CM Yanthungo Patton also handed over a Beloro to Rhanbemo Odyou, President BJP Wokha. Meanwhile, he has encouraged the President and All the BJP karyakartas to strengthen the party leadership in the grassroot and enhance their ability to serve the people more effectively.

The programme was chaired by James Tungoe, Vice President of BJP Wokha Unit and Councillor, Wokha Town Council. The opening prayer was delivered by Khochobeni Odyuo, Secretary of BJP Wokha Unit, followed by a welcome address from Nongothung Kikon, Convenor of the Wokha District Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti Committee. A short speech was delivered by Bichano Ngullie, State Spokesperson of BJP Nagaland and member of the state-level Ambedkar Jayanti Committee.

Further remarks were shared by Rhanbemo Odyuo, President of BJP Wokha Unit, and a special musical performance was rendered by Emily Murry, Media Secretary of the BJYM, BJP Wokha Unit. The vote of thanks was presented by Bichamo Shitiri, Treasurer of the BJP Wokha Unit. The event concluded with the rendition of the National Anthem.
