BMWM: First step towards making environment safe

Zunheboto, March 3 (MExN): The Bio Medical Waste Management (BMWM) training organized by Nagaland Health Project (NHP) was held from February 26 to March 1 at Youth Hall, Zunheboto.


Dr CW Tungoe, CMO, Zunheboto in his key note address held that Bio Medical Waste Management will be the first step to make our environment safe. It will create awareness amongst the various categories of staff regarding the responsibilities and the method for segregation and scientific disposal of hospital waste. This was stated in a press release from Shekho Sophie, DMO, CMO Office Zunheboto.


Dr Akaho, Deputy CMO gave an introduction of the BMWM: why it is needed, who are responsible for BMWM and what are its steps. Dr Akaho further stressed how this waste management training will help reduce bio medical waste hazards and ultimately have an impact on quality health care and infection-free environment.


District Facilitator, Ajanuo explained about the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). She further talked about the importance of hand hygiene and vaccination.


Dr Shikatoli gave an overview of BMW segregation, collection, storage, transportation and disposal system. The importance of BMW segregation color coded system for waste collection and how to implement BMWM system at health facilities was further highlighted by the doctor.


Inalu Rochill, BPM, Akuluto block briefed the participants on the rules under BMWM 2016, roles of operator and occupier and duties of central/state government and pollution control board.


Inahoto Chophy, BPM, Aghunato block, emphasized on District Monitoring Committee (DMC) , its composition and roles and functions of DMC.


The training was held in four batches comprising of five sessions each and was attended by 238 participants comprising of Medical Officers, Nurses, Medical Attendant, Health Workers from 63 health units. Dr Viholi, DTO, RNTCP, DAPCU, NVBDCP and NHM staff also attended.
