A bomb, suspected to be a hand grenade lobbed by suspected militants, exploded at the gate of the residence of a forest official in Imphal East district in the wee hours of December 14. However, there is no report of any human casualty in the explosion that damaged window windshields of under construction building of the forest official identified as Seram Shashikumar (59), of Nongmeibung under Porompat police station of Imphal East district.
Shashikumar is serving as a range officer in the Manipur Forest department and currently posted at Chakpikarong of Chandel district.
According to a police source, the bomb lobbed by miscreants exploded early morning, around 4.15 am. The police who rushed to the spot recovered a safety-pin and remnants of the bomb. The police suspect monetary demand from a militant group as the motive behind the triggering of the explosive at the residence of the government officer.
As disclosed by the family members, the police said, the officer recently received a demand letter from a faction of armed group KCP (Kangleipak Communist Party).
The explosion at the residential area in Imphal amid the enhanced security measures across the Imphal following recent series of bomb threats to various government officers.
Recently, suspected militants triggered an explosion at a place close to the official quarter of superintendent of RIMS hospital near the main entrance gate of the medical institution. A woman passerby sustained splinter injuries in the blast.
At the two instances, the police have also recovered two hand grenades at the houses of two individuals including a staff of the state consumer affairs, food and public distribution.
Since then, the police have been conducting search operations at selected places.
