Border villagers demand security

Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): The Yajang villagers, due to constant harassment from the Assam Police personnel, demanded more security from the state government even while saying that the villagers are now determined to protect themselves from the Assam Police come what may.

A statement from the Yajang ‘C’ Village Council stated that on May 29 last at around 12 noon, the Assam Police led by the Platoon Commander of Chutiagari Post under Rajabari area in Jorhat district along with the Forest Officials came up to Yajang ‘C’ area and damaged and uprooted plantation crops such as tea, banana and bamboo belonging to the villagers and further warned the men folk in the village of dire consequences if anyone is seen working in the area.

The Council stated that the area under question is totally under the jurisdiction of the Yajang ‘C’ village and added that even the Chutiagari Post of Assam Police was set up by the Assam government in the land which falls under the village jurisdiction. The release alleged that another company of the Assam Armed Police known as Laojan Company Post has been set up nearby which falls under the village.

The Council further alleged that the Assam government is issuing land pattas to countless non-locals and illegal migrants in that area under the protection of Assam Police which ultimately lead to land encroachment belonging to the village by non-locals.

In this regard, the Council lamented that the personnel of ‘C’ Company of pecial NAP stationed at Yajang ‘C’ Village is not sufficient enough as it is less than a Platoon. The Council stated that the force of the Special NAP at the village needs to be strengthened so as to prevent further intrusion by the Assam police and Forest Department.

The Council also demanded the State government to take steps to establish Village Guards (VG) in Yajang and neighbouring villages bordering Assam in order to safeguard the territorial integrity of Nagaland.

The council also demanded that the state and central government immediately compensate the families whose plantation crops were damaged by the Assam Police.

The Council further informed that the Yajang villagers are now determined to protect their village land by any means and warned that the Assam Government would be solely held responsible for any untoward incident or consequences in the future.
