Kohima, September 28 (MExN): The third phase of ‘Breaking the Silence’ programme on awareness campaign on Mental Health & Substance Abuse took place at Namsai, Arunachal University of Studies on September 24 last.

Nongrum Bahum, Miss Meghalaya 2024 & Miss Earth India 2025 was the main speaker of the programme.

The ‘Breaking the Silence’ campaign was launched to confront the stigma surrounding substance abuse and mental health, with the goal of replacing silence with understanding, dialogue, and access to support.

Fear of judgment and misunderstanding often prevents individuals from seeking help, reinforcing cycles of isolation.

This campaign challenges such barriers, emphasizing that mental health deserves the same priority as physical health.

Spearheaded by the ACTS Connect team, the initiative began in 2023 and initially focused on Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland.

In 2024, its reach extended to Meghalaya, with a strong emphasis on youth engagement to inspire long-term community change.
Central to the campaign is public education- raising awareness, promoting open conversations, and empowering young people to seek help without fear. It also shares information on prevention, treatment, and available support systems.

To amplify its impact, Breaking the Silence supports the Beauty With A Purpose (BWAP) projects of youth ambassadors including Kenei Ritse (Miss Northeast 2023), Neiketuno Sechii (Miss Nagaland 2023), and Hikali Achumi (Miss Nagaland 2022).

The latest youth icons joining BTS 3.0 includes Angelia Marwein, Femina Miss India North East 2024, Tadu Lunia, Miss Arunachal Pradesh 2024, Nongrum Bahun, Miss Meghalaya 2024 and Lovikali Swu, Miss Chümoukedima 2024

Their involvement brings relatable voices to the campaign, helping connect with young people and promote positive change.

This initiative has received strong institutional backing from the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment), and the Departments of Social Justice & Empowerment and Tribal Affairs, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, alongside the Recovery Wellness Society, Assam.

The campaign’s impact is evident in growing public discourse and increased social media engagement, with hashtags like #BreakTheSilence helping drive awareness and support.

‘Breaking the Silence’ has made commendable progress in addressing stigma and building supportive environments. However, sustained effort, collaboration, and advocacy remain keys to ensuring continued momentum and nationwide change.
