Broader consultations before final demarcation of new districts: CNTC

Dimapur, February 25 (MExN): Broader consultations should be taken before setting the final demarcation of boundaries for the new districts that were created by bifurcating Dimapur district, the Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) said on Friday.

In a press release, the council stated that the creation of new districts was a welcome step as it would offer growth and an expanded range of development. However, it said that the government’s ‘hasty’ move to determine and integrate the old existing demarcation of the Dhansiripar sub-division and some areas of Sumi villages, which have a long standing district boundary problem with Peren district, together with the newly created district of Chümoukedima without considering the detailed analysis and views of all stakeholders has led to huge public outcry.

“Such important policy making and administrative rearrangement must be thoroughly studied before implementation otherwise it leads to serious repercussions and social unrest,” it said while asking the government to seek wider and broader consultation before final demarcation is set.

Terming it as a “forceful amalgamation tantamount to suppression of justice,” the CNTC said that the move has hurt the sentiments of the people in the disputed areas as well as the Dimasas, who are the earliest settlers of Dimapur.

“They are genuinely pleading through all democratic approaches to restore them back to Dimapur district,” it said while pointing out that even the name ‘Dimapur’ has been derived from the Dimasa word and “placing them at another newly created district other than Dimapur is a forceful attempt to break their extended ancient lineage with Dimapur.” The recent creation of the new districts should not alienate any section of people but should be fair, just and without any bias, it maintained.

In this connection, the CNTC urged the state government to take prompt measures in resolving the fragmentation, which it said, has led to a large public outcry from the Dimasas of Dhansiripar areas. Additionally, it also urged the government to resolve the demarcation issue between Dimapur-Peren districts.
