The World Day against Child Labour was launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.
Each year on June 12, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.
The theme for this year, ‘Generation Safe & Healthy’ aims to shine a spotlight on the global need to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour.
As the world comes together to commit itself to eliminate all forms of child labour, the day was also commemorating in Nagaland.
‘Exploring Vulnerable Children - A Case of Child Labour’
In Dimapur, Sushil Kumar Patel IAS, DC Dimapur released a book titled ‘Exploring Vulnerable Children - A Case of Child Labour’ at an event organised by the Community Educational Centre Society at CEC School Campus, Grace Colony Nagarjan on June 12.
The book is written by Subonenba Longkumer, Director of Community Educational Centre Society, a press note informed.
Longkumer is also the Nodal Director of CHILDLINE 1098, Nagaland and is also the Governing Board Member of CHILDLINE India Foundation. The author in his own word described that it was a long cherished dream to write a book based on his lifelong work with marginalized children.
Reading an excerpt from the book, the DC Dimapur said that it highlights the state and non-state interventions and initiatives taken in the area of education, health and components of rehabilitation. The book also depicts some important aspects on the issue of child labour with special focus on the marginalized children in Dimapur and Nagaland in general. The study details out legislative measures and constitutional provisions. The book also provides systematic documentation of marginalized children's’ magnitude in the area of study.
Dimapur being a district with an increasing number of migrants, the DC Dimapur said, “Children are the most affected during migration when the poor families migrate to urban areas such as Dimapur in search of earning prospect.”
In his address, the DC lamented that the impediments of child labour was not only confined to Nagaland and India alone but the world in general and it has become a need of the hour to address this burning issue. He urged the gathering to make use of the Police helpdesk and Child Helpline Numbers. He also asked the NCLP Project Director and other agencies to share the cases of children in vulnerable situations with the appropriate authority. He reiterated that such reporting was not to be used for arresting or taking actions but rather to take further steps to counsel the victims and family members and to create awareness. He assured the support of the District Administration in whatever circumstances possible.
The other dignitaries who attended the programme were Pikato E. Tuccu, district Child Protection Officer, Dimapur, W. Temwang Konyak Asst. Labour Commissioner, Dimapur and Lhangti Konyak Project Director NCLP. Lhangti Konyak highlighted the role played by the NCLP in addressing Child Labour and also the rehabilitation aspects carried out through the project. The program was also attended by the Staffs and students of CECS, and teachers and children of 24 NCLP Centres and other invitees.
The programme was chaired by Nikitauile Chawang, Nodal Coordinator CHILDLINE 1098 Nagaland. Kenny CECS staff said the benediction pray followed by a special presentation by the Children of Community Educational Centre School. Director CECS delivered the welcome speech. CEC School students Shilubenla and Vitoli presented a special number respectively and Ranjit gave a short speech on the significance of the World Day against Child Labour.
Headmaster CECS Tathagat Patnaik delivered the Vote of thanks after which with the benediction prayer by Toshi Aier, Program Officer CECS the programme was closed.
