Peren, November 17 (MExN): The Care-Centre for Environment and Rural Poor (C-CERP), a facilitating NGO partner for the NFMP Peren Forest Division, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Peren, organised a one-day training programme on “Improved Cultivation Practices of Vegetables and Distribution of Seeds” for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Peletkie Village on November 14.

The training, under the Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP), aimed to enhance agricultural skills among local farmers, focusing on advanced vegetable cultivation and sustainable pest management practices.

The training began with a field visit to local jhum fields, allowing experts to examine diseases affecting Naga King Chili and Taro crops and provide direct insights into management strategies.

This was followed by a training session at the Village Council Hall, led by distinguished KVK Peren experts Dr Patu K. Zeliang, ACTO (PBG), and Dr Prashant Kalal, SMS Horti (Fruit Science).

During the training, Dr. Zeliang discussed the nutritional importance of a variety of vegetables, including beans, tomatoes, amaranth, cabbages, onions, and chili, emphasising their role in maintaining a balanced diet. She also provided practical advice on pest control for these crops to promote healthy and sustainable yields.

Dr Kalal’s session focused on managing pests and diseases affecting citrus fruit trees and vegetable crops, explaining organic pesticide applications and cultural methods to prevent leaf curl and other diseases. The interactive format allowed farmers to clarify doubts and identify common pests, engaging directly with the experts to gain valuable knowledge for their crop management, informed a press release.

At the training, KVK Peren also distributed essential farming resources, including 20 packets of treated vegetable seeds (covering the crops discussed in the training), three knapsack sprayers, three watering cans, a hoe, a bottle of neem oil antifungal agent, and over 30 pieces of hermetic bags for seed preservation.

Farmers were also taught nursery bed preparation techniques to increase seed germination rates, enhancing crop success.
