KOHIMA (MExN): The two-day Silver Jubilee celebration of the Angami Women Organisation (AWO) got underway today at the local ground Kohima, where the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio graced the inaugural function as chief guest.

In his address, Rio asserted that the economic strength of Nagaland was agriculture and made a fervent call to all to get involved in agro activities with greater zeal. Rio regretted that there was no industrial unit worth its name, pointing out that it had to depend almost entirely on essential commodities procured from outside.

He urged for adopting modern methods of cultivation to enhance productivity and to secure self-sufficiency. Reminding that the year 2006 has been declared “Year of Farmers,” Rio encouraged farmers to identify suitable crops for mass cultivation.

Rio admitted that the prevailing peaceful atmosphere had enabled the government to carry out various development activities. Terming ‘unity and peace’ as the foremost requirements for development, he called upon the people to build better understanding and support one another for the overall progress of Nagaland. “The prosperity of the State depends on the collective efforts of the people regardless of colours and the political affiliations”, Rio said. Putting in a word of caution, Rio said employment avenues had reached a saturation point in the public sector, and called upon parents, especially women folk to encourage their children in undertaking self-employment activities.

Rio expressed appreciation to the AWO for their labour and efforts in organising the celebration cum sales in a befitting manner. He further appreciated the women for their hard labour as a result of which they have contributed to their family and society. “The strength of our women is seen today in this very celebration”, Rio remarked.

After unfurling the Jubilee flag and four unit flags, Rio visited all the stalls where local agricultural products, wild edible vegetables, handlooms, handicrafts and hand-woven products were displayed for sale. Rio announced a contribution of Rs. 10 lakhs from the Local Area Development Fund of all the Angami MLAs and the CM’s Fund to the AWO.

The function was attended by MLA Medokul Sophie, APO President, Tenyimia Union President and other dignitaries. President AWO, Kevinourheno Seyie chaired the function while the Invocation was offered by Khrieleno Terhüja. The welcome address was delivered by Alhouü Dzüvichü. The Silver Jubilee Souvenir was released by Khrienyuü Kire.
