Kohima, October 28 (MExN): In continuation of the consumer awareness campaign by the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection under Kohima district, the Office of the Assistant Controller, LMCP, Kohima in collaboration with the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organization, Tseminyu Unit organized a consumer awareness programme on October 27 for the first time in Tseminyu town.
The programme was held on the theme ‘Rights & Responsibilities of Consumers’ with Theodore Yanthan, Addl. Deputy Commissioner as the chief guest and it was attended by the public leaders, school students and citizens of Tseminyu town.
Haikambe Zeliang, Joint Controller, LM & CP Department gave the keynote address where he highlighted the rights of the consumers and how to get correct weights & measurements, and also about the activities of the Department. He reminded the gathering that the Consumer Protection Act 1986 protects consumers from unscrupulous traders.
While exhorting the gathering, the chief guest in his speech urged the participants to know the responsibilities for every consumer right and also to minimize the habit of taking loans and credits from the shops where we intend to forget to check the price and bargain for the commodities due to which the shopkeepers gets the opportunity to cheat the consumers. He also asked the gathering to avail the opportunity to learn about the consumer rights.
I. Meyimeren Ao, Assistant Controller, LMCP, Kohima spoke on the theme ‘Rights & Responsibilities of Consumers’. He highlighted the 6 (six) basic rights of the consumers i.e. Right to safety, Right to information, Right to choice, Right to be heard, Right to seek redressal, Right to consumer education. He also minutely explained in very simple way to the gathering on how to seek redressal of consumer complaints in the District Forum, State Commission and National Commission for their basic rights.
Earlier, welcome note was given by John Semy, President, NVCO Tseminyu Unit, invocation by Hanunlo Kath, Youth Director, BBC Tseminyu, special number from GHSS, Tseminyu and the program was led and concluded by Mezo Kuotsu, Inspector, LMCP, Kohima.
