Can Youth conducts first webinar on SPATIAL Project

Dimapur, August 30 (MExN): Community Avenue Network (CAN) Youth held its first webinar for school teachers under its Students Parents and Teachers Involvement for Authentic Learning (SPATIAL) Project on August 28.

According to a press release from SPATIAL Project Coordinator, Lairing Dau Jigdung on August 30, Dr Humi Thaosen, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology of Gauhati University; Jonas G Pfaeffinger, Advisor & Project Manager of Childaid Network Germany and Rev Fr Roy George SDB, Executive Director of AIDA Dimapur were the panelists for the webinar.

Dr Humi Thaosen, spoke on the topic ‘Process of Continuous Learning to Overcome Depression’ where she highlighted on the stress and anxiety faced by parents as well as students, especially with regard to education via various online platforms. She also emphasized on the need for teachers to remain well-connected with parents and students and build up avenues for quality interaction among them. She also suggested that teachers should be trained on how to take online classes, as many are still not familiar with the concept.

Fr Roy George spoke on the topic ‘Engaging Students in Home- Based Learning’ and shared a presentation. Among others, he also provided insight on how teachers need to plan out lessons, how to help students learn and how to understand if they have grasped the topic and engage students by giving them control of their learning process through interactive learning activities, the release stated.

Jonas G Pfaeffinger spoke on the challenges and way forward for quality education and child rights in the context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. He expressed concern that the pandemic could mean higher dropout rates among students and stressed on the need to reach out to students who do not have access to smart phones or good internet connectivity.

He suggested the use of local volunteers who can organize workshops which can act as safe spaces for students who do not have access to the internet and also recommended teachers’ training programmes for long-term benefits and quality education.
