Candidates of ULB Election 2017 to Pungro Town Council write to CM

Kohima, March 7 (MExN): In an open letter to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, nineteen candidates of Urban Local Body (ULB) Election 2017 to the Pungro Town Council have expressed “serious concern.” 

The signatories wrote the letter on Monday to the CM over the ULB election, where in 2017, Nagaland witnessed violent protests against the ULB elections, which provided the contentious issue of 33% reservation for women.  

“Thus, resulted the vote cast of the intending candidates of Pungro Town Council were still kept at ADC office Pungro town without counting, which was successfully cast on February 1, 2017 at Pungro Town in nine wards including, Khiangtopong, Officers, Rest House, Old Bazaar, Mission, Medical, Tsuwong, Forest and PWD,” it stated.

The signatories stated that “the nine wards of different political parties of Pungro Town Council comprising of Naga People’s Front, Bharatiya Janata Party and Independent Party appealed to the state government to recover the expenditure which were outlay during the election process, if the government declared their cast vote as null and void.”

They have also strongly opposed the government decision on the induction of Advisory Board to Town Councils and further, requests the authority concerned to take appropriate measure at the earliest time possible and fulfill the genuine demand of the candidates and in the larger interest of its citizens.
