Capacity building programme on scientific pig farming held at CAU Jalukie

Jalukie, February 22 (MExN): A six-day Capacity Building Programme on “Augment of Pig Production and Reproduction through Scientific Management” was organised from February 16 to 21, by the Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Jalukie, Peren district, Nagaland.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, and supported by the ICAR-Consortia Research Platform on Vaccines and Diagnostics (ICAR-CRPVD) under the NEH component. Altogether, 30 tribal pig farmers from Nagaland registered for the training.

During the inaugural programme, a training manual was released by Dr Samaresh Kumar Das, Dean in-charge of the college and chairperson of the function, in the presence of Special Guest Albert Ezung, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jalukie, Peren, and Dr Tukheswar Chutia, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, who also served as Course Director of the training programme.

At the outset, Dr Tukheswar Chutia delivered the welcome address and briefed participants on the objectives and structure of the training. Dr Samaresh Kumar Das encouraged the farmers to acquire scientific knowledge from the programme and emerge as potential pig producers. Addressing the gathering, Albert Ezung highlighted the opportunities in pig farming in the state and urged trainees to take up commercial pig production using scientific approaches. He expressed confidence that the training would not only disseminate scientific knowledge, skills and technologies but also provide a platform to discuss common challenges faced by pig farmers.

The comprehensive training programme was designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application. The curriculum comprised 15 lectures delivered by 14 resource persons, along with five practical sessions featuring hands-on demonstrations at the pig farm.

The lectures covered a wide range of topics, including pig genetic resources, selection of suitable breeds for breeding farms, housing, feeding and management practices, reproductive biotechnologies such as artificial insemination, common reproductive disorders and their management, major pig diseases including parasitic diseases and their control measures, heat stress management, biosecurity practices, and bank loan provisions for pig farming.

The programme concluded on February 21. All trainees were awarded certificates and provided with training manuals upon successful completion of the course. In addition, pig feed, vitamins, mineral mixtures, liver tonics, calcium and iron tonics, anthelmintics, potash, antiseptic ointments, sprays and other essential inputs were distributed to the participants.
