Capital punishment issue: BAN questions State's silence

Seeks clarification from various stakeholders

Dimapur, August 1 (MExN): The Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has unequivocally condemned the recent threat recent death threat issued by the NSCN/GPRN (Khango) to the Proprietor of KKB Rülho and has further questioned the State Government’s silence on the issue.

In view of the ongoing issue, the Association also sought immediate clarification from stakeholders regarding the role of Ceasefire Monitoring Group/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB) and mandate of Naga Political Groups (NPGs)
In a press release, the BAN stated that the action of threat is wholly unacceptable in a civilised society and merit serious scrutiny.

The accountability of all organisations, including NSCN/GPRN (Khango), must be addressed with the same rigour applied to Government activities and asked the concerned NPG to “provides a comprehensive account of its actions over the years.”
“Just as the Government is accountable to the people, so too must every organisation...No entity is above the law, and transparency is essential for the public's trust and welfare,” it added.

The BAN also pulled up the State Government’s apparent silence on the issue and pointed out that despite verbal assurances from successive governments, tangible action remains scarce.

As a result, the State’s potential remains untapped due to poor infrastructure, insecurity, multiple taxation and electoral malpractices, it contended, leading to dependent economy with ‘sky high’ unemployment.

This, according to the Association, is putting future of the younger generation at risk unless urgent corrective measures are implemented.

To this end, it argued that the people must not allow any individual or organisation to “impose their rules upon us, leading to further poverty and misery.”

“It is crucial for the Naga people to uphold God's promise to Work and Eat, ensuring the survival and prosperity of our next generation,” it added.

It further noted that death threats will only alienate the public from their cause.

Thus, while firmly denouncing the threat, the BAN underscored the need for accountability, and calls for collective action to secure a safe place for the younger generation.

It also demanded immediate clarification on what the CFMG/CFSB is doing to address the “ongoing death threats happening under their watch” and wondered whether it was in “connivance for these incidents.”

“It is imperative to scrutinise the role of the ceasefire monitoring cell, especially given the numerous extortion cases occurring under their full knowledge,” it asserted.

The BAN also contended that the Naga people have not given any mandate to any NPG to issue “death sentences to fellow Nagas for not meeting their illegal demands” and the original idea Naga movement was against imposition of Indian taxes, alien cultures and political control.

Accordingly, it stated that it is unthinkable for the NPGs impose “unbearable taxes upon the same people for whom they are claimed to be fighting for political freedom” and termed it total contradiction to the Nagas’ political commitment and aspirations.

The BAN also noted that as local business community, it always expects patriotic support and political leadership from the NPGs towards the growth and development of the land for better future.

Hence, it demanded that the group responsible for issuance of capital punishment to the proprietor of KKB Rülho to withdraw the pronouncement.

“Rather, take a new positive path in promoting Naga businessmen and entrepreneurs as fellow partners and citizens in fighting for our Naga cause,” it urged.
