Halcyon United (Phek) today entered the semi finals after defeating strong opponent Maverick FC (Mon) 3-2 in the last quarter final match of the ongoing 8th edition of Capt. N Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament 2024 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.
Anticipation was high for Maverick FC after their impressive 12-0 victory over St. Xavier College (Peren) in the opening match of the tournament, which had many pegging them as frontrunners.
However, Halcyon United entered the pitch with something to prove, delivering a disciplined and strategic performance to surprise the crowd and halt Mavericks’ momentum.
The action began in stunning fashion as Ngamminlun of Halcyon United netted the first goal just one minute into the game, immediately putting Maverick on the defensive.
Although Maverick rallied, Halcyon’s defense stood strong, setting the stage for an intense first half.
In the 40th minute, Vebizo added a second goal for Halcyon, and just four minutes later, Shurhosul struck again.
Maverick FC responded with determination, finding their footing when Bumang scored in the 23rd minute. The breakthrough reignited the team’s spirit, and in the 46th minute, Kevisanyu netted another goal for the team.
Despite a fierce push from Maverick, Halcyon United held firm, skillfully managing their lead until the final whistle.
Kevisanyu of Maverick FC is currently the highest goal scorer with 6 goals in 2 games.
