‘Celebrate spirit of togetherness this Sekrenyi’

Kohima, February 24 (MExN): On occasion of Sekrenyi festival, the Governor of Assam and Nagaland, Prof Jagdish Mukhi conveyed greetings to Angami brothers and sisters and to the people of Nagaland.

The Governor said that Sekrenyi festival is an occasion for the Angami people to celebrate the spirit of togetherness, cleansing themselves of all the wrongs and renouncing ill-will against each other if any. “Festival like Sekrenyi has kept the unity of the people, be in the village or beyond through centuries,” he said.

The Governor urged the Angami youth to comprehend and carry forward the underlying intellectual, spiritual and philosophical significance of Sekrenyi and revive the positive values, strengthen the spirit of peace and unity. “Let us continue to observe Covid-19 protocols throughout the celebrations. On this auspicious occasion, I wish you all good health, peace and prosperity. God bless Nagaland!” he said. 

The Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton in his greeting on the occasion of Sekrenyi said that the festival is celebrated for purification and sanctification of the soul and the body. He said that the Angamis are not only proud of their rich culture and traditions, but also preserve and exhibit the same with much enthusiasm. 

The NSCN (R) led by Akato Chophi in a message said that 'Sekrenyi' is one of the major festival of the Angami Naga tribe, which falls in the Angami month of ‘Kezei’ (February 25), and signifies a celebration of purification accompanied with feasting and singing. The festival is celebrated for 10 days. The objective of the festival is to renew and “make holy” by cleansing the “body and the soul” of the village as a whole, and to bring forth unity and it also marks initiation of young people to adulthood.

The Angami Sekrenyi cum Mini-Hornbill festival will be celebrated at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama with Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio as the special guest on February 25. The festival will be a two-day affair with cultural activities on day one at Kisama and day two at Tuophema Tourist village on February 26.
