The Don Bosco College, Kohima honoured 375 graduating students at the 9th Graduation Ceremony (Class of 2023-26) held at the college auditorium, Kohima on July 24.
Out of 375 graduating students, political science department form the highest number with 147, Education-27, English- 41, History-42, Psychology-49, Sociology-49, Commerce-12, Botany-2 and Zoology- 8.
Twelve students from this college have been conferred with a special award for bagging Nagaland University Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) toppers.
Speaking on the occasion as special invitee, Prof Jano S Liegise, Dean, School of Humanities & Education, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, acknowledged that the Catholic educational institutions have done so much to lift up and develop the educational scenario not only in Nagaland but across the country.
Congratulating the graduating students, she said “Now, you are eligible to sit for any competitive exams, especially the UPSC, NPSC.”
“As you prepare yourself to move into the next leg of your educational journey, you have to be mindful of many things before you enjoy and achieve your goal.”
Stressing on the need to have a very clear goal in life, Liegise said “Take each and every task with sincerity.”
Sharing areas of concern for achieving goal, she told the students to handle failure in a positive note.
She said that failures are bound to come because no one is exempted or no one is free from failures and disappointments in life. “The important thing is, you learn how to fix them,” she said and encouraged the students to rise up from failure and have courage to face the challenges in life.
Failure and learning to face disappointments is a part of your success story, Liegise added.
‘Be ambassadors of hope, justice, peace’
Stating that graduation is much more than the conferring of degrees, Fr Dr Tious Vargeshe, Principal, Don Bosco College Kohima said “It is a celebration of perseverance, hard work, dreams fulfilled, and new journeys waiting to unfold.”
Today, he said, we gather not merely to recognize academic achievement, but to celebrate the transformation of young men and women who have grown in knowledge, character, and values during their years at Don Bosco College.
“This year is particularly special for us as 375 graduates receive their degrees and step into a new chapter of their lives,” he said.
He told the students that “education is not merely about earning a degree; “it is about becoming persons of integrity, competence, compassion, and service.”
He asked them to value what they have learned at Don Bosco, have faith in God, respect for every human person, commitment to excellence and ready to serve others.
Further, he asked them to be ambassadors of hope, justice, and peace wherever life leads them.
Meanwhile, Varghese thanked Don Bosco rector Rev Fr Dr Xavier Mattam, whose constant guidance and fatherly support continue to inspire the growth and mission of the institution.
‘Never stop learning’
Celebrating the achievement of the graduating students, Abuno Meyase, President, Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) said “Graduation is more than receiving a degree. It is a celebration of resilience, discipline, growth and courage to pursue your dreams.” Thanking the college principal and faculty members. Meyase said, “Your guidance, encouragement and dedication have shaped our children into individuals who are prepared to face the future with knowledge, integrity and purpose.”
To graduates, she said “Remember that this degree is not the end of your journey but the beginning of a new chapter. The road you enter will present opportunities as well as challenges.”
She asked them to work hard, stay humble, remain curious and never stop learning.
Also asking them to remember to love, respect, concern for community, integrity, openness and transparency, she said “This will always put you in good steps.”
Go forward with confidence, embrace every opportunity and never be afraid to pursue your passion, Meyase added.
Rev Fr Antony Thambi, Director, National Skill & Global Language Academy and former Chancellor of the Diocese of Cochin also talked on future opportunities while Ruvuomenuo Sorhie, Department of Political Science spoke on behalf of graduates.
Dr Jarani Maheo, Dean of Academics led the conferment of awards.
Asavi Lea, 3rd Semester, Department of Political Science comepred the programme while Rev. Fr. Dr. Xavier Mattam invoked God’s blessings. Music Club presented special number while Dr Abel Kavahru, Asst. Prof, Department of Sociology proposed vote of thanks.
Rev Fr CM Joseph, Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish, Kohima village, Rev. Fr. Innocent Panmei, Principal, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima and Rev Fr TP Sebastian also present at the programme.
