Census Director leads street count as final phase end

State Census Director, Hekali Zhimomi (IAS) and DC Dimapur, Maongwati Aier, along with Census officials in the final phase of Census at Dimapur Railway station on Monday night.

DIMAPUR | FEBRUARY 28 : As part of the final phase of the country-wide census exercise, the Department of Census in Nagaland on Monday night took to the streets, railway station and slum areas in the commercial hub Dimapur, to take head count of the floating population yet to be enumerated. Led by the state Census Director, Hekali Zhimomi and Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Maongwati Aier, more than 80 Census officials have been assigned to cover four sectors and enumerate the “houseless households” by Monday night.
Talking to mediapersons at circuit house, minutes before the final operation, the Census Director said that on the whole, the census exercise in the state has been successful. Hekali said that in the final phase, the thrust was not on “accuracy” but also on “informative information” to help in better planning.
While not ruling out minor discrepancies and hiccups in the huge exercise, the Census Director said that the “Revision phase,” besides registering deaths and births occurring in the interim, would also rectify the minor glitches. The “Revision phase” is scheduled from March 1-5.
According to DC Dimapur, the estimated population of the “houseless households” or floating population in Dimapur would be 3000-3500. Both Hekali and Maongwati said that Monday night’s exercise would be a “detailed exercise” to make sure that the Census officials are assisted by members from Prodigal Home, a NGO involved with street children, restitutes and others.
