Central team visits Indigenous weaving center

Dimapur, May 3 (MExN): A central team from New Delhi led by Principal Adviser to the Planning Commision, Firoza Mehrotrai visited Akhoya village last Friday to have a glimpse of the indigenous weaving activities as practiced in villages.

Weaving is the main occupation for womenfolk in Akhoya.  The visiting team learnt that the women weavers of this village still rely on the traditional methods of weaving to earn their livelihood and support their families.

The village boasts of having at least one weaver in every house hold besides also having formed several Self Help Groups among weavers in the village.

The quality of hand-woven shawls produced has so far been found to be well designed, comfortable and assure durability.

Besides weaving, Akhoya village is also known for its speciality in indigo dyeing. Locally woven cotton shawls dyed in indigo at Akhoya village are still considered to be the best, and has proved to be worthy indigenous products in the state. 

The combination of locally available indigo plants and water obtained from a particular well used for dyeing has produced magnificent results.

The central visiting team included Firiza Mehrotrai, Principal adviser, Planning Commission, Jayati Chandra, Secretary, Youth Affairs, Govt of India, Brohmo Chaudury, Adviser, (SP,NE), Alemtemshi Jamir, Additional Chief Secretary, Nagaland and Padmshree Sentila Yanger.

Akhoya is a village under Mokokchung district.
