For the past few years, schools in Changtongya, a hilly sub-division town in Mokokchung district of Nagaland, have been consistently producing sterling performances in Nagaland Board of School Education Class 10 Examination. The last two years have been exceptional.

In 2017, 4 schools – 3 private and 1 government – had 100% pass percentage, a record breaking performance for a town with a population of 7,532 persons according to 2011 census.

This year, it enhanced the tally in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam.

All the private schools located in the town recorded a 100% pass percentage, while 2 government high schools under Sub Divisional Education Office (SDEO) Changtongya also achieved the cent-percent feat.

Altogether there are eight – 4 government and 4 private – high schools under Changtongya sub-division.

The four private schools are Christian Standard Hr. Sec. School, St. John's School, Oriental School, and Green River Valley High School (GRVHS).

While the first three schools had 100% success rate in 2017, GRVHS had 92% pass percentage with one student flunking the exam. In 2018, all the private schools scored 100% pass percentage.

The performances of the Government High School (GHS) under SDEO Changtongya were most encouraging. Last year, GHS Changtongya B had 100% success rate. This year, it was repeated by two others – GHS Yaongyimsen Compound and GHS Unger.

The feat of GHS Yaongyimsen Compound is most commendable. In both 2017 and 2018, all students appearing the Class 10 exams were successful. The GHS Unger too improved its performance from 23% in 2017 to 100% this year. The results of other two government schools – RC Chiten Jamir Memorial GHS, Changtongya and GHS Changtongya B – stood at 63% and 62% respectively.

Healthy competitions, new bloods Extra effort by the teachers as well as the administrator, a teacher from GRVHS informed when queried about the significant improvement in results. Schools in Changtongya cater to students from the sub-division as well as from neighboring Longleng district.

The emergence of new schools and revamping of old ones in the recent past also contributed in creating a healthy competition, a town citizen observed.

He also attributed this year’s success to the effort of Changtongya Town Ao Students’ Union. As a part of its Golden Jubilee celebration, the union organized a one-month coaching class particularly for Class 10 students.

The students’ union and churches of respective villages under the sub-division also conduct such activities in their respective jurisdictions. Study hours as well as coaching classes are conducted during winter breaks till the exams. The arrival of dedicated Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyhan (RMSA) teachers is a big contributing factor for the improvement in government schools.

The new teachers joined after the up-gradation of three middle schools to GHS in recent years. Before that, the sub-division only had one GHS.

The ‘new bloods’ are literally running the show in most GHS with improved teaching method and management, informed a teacher in Changtongya Village.

The teacher also said that the village also instituted ‘Best Student Cash Award’ through an Education Union, formed as a part of centenary celebration of government school in Changtongya in 2017.

The efforts are sure paying off with private schools recording 100% this year, while the GHS also performed relatively well with 81.25% pass percentage in aggregate.
