Kohima, October 6 (MExN): The Charity Welfare Society conducted an environment awareness and global warming programme at Khezhakeno Village Council hall on October 6.
The resources person, Neikodo Chikha PGT, Government High School Khezhakeno said that the environment, broadly considered, embraces both the natural and man-made resources for the enhancement of human welfare. He stated that the natural environment consists of atmosphere including, for example, the ozone layer; the hydrosphere including rivers and oceans and the biosphere, living matter of the earth, including animals and plants. The man-made environment consists of the physical Infrastructure created by man.
He also said that the resources and services provided by the environment can be classified into three broad categories. First, the environment provides material inputs such as agricultural products, mineral resources, and the scope for buildings or roads. Second, it provides waste disposal services. Third, the environment provides services such as the supporting (e.g., breathing air) and amenity (e.g., landscape) services. “The supply of each service depends on the ambient environmental quality. Natural forces, without man’s intervention, or human actions can bring about environmental changes,” he added.
Speaking on the effects of Global Warming, the resource person said that due to more emissions of harmful substances, glaciers are melting, and sea water levels are rising, posing a threat to coastal areas around the world. “Global warming is also leading to increasing incidence of droughts, water shortages, famine, floods, landslides, hurricanes, changes in rain patterns and more such extreme climatic conditions,” he added. The temperature of Earth has increased between 0.4 to 0.8 degrees Celsius (1.4°Fahrenheit) in the last hundred years. Sea is present in more than 70 percent area of the world and has an extraordinary impact on global weather, but the heat from global warming is rapidly landing in the sea.
CWS Secretary Rajesh Singh in a press release stated that the programme was successfully attended by 70 participants.
