Of Chief Guests

Kevitho Kera

We have a Chief Guest Culture in Nagaland which seems to have been permanently entrenched in our mind.

Why do we invite politicians and bureaucrats in our gatherings as Chief Guests? To get wisdom, knowledge and insight or to squeeze out money from them in the form of donations?

Isn't it wrong?

First of all the money they donate ranging from thousands to lakhs are public money. This is abetting corruption; we are making them more corrupt by letting them take public money to donate to us.

The intention on inviting Chief guests should solely be to get knowledge, wisdom and insight. Infact we should be the one handing over petrol fare to them as gifts for coming all the way to grace the ocassion.

Let us stop this expectation of donations from chief guest culture. Let us call Chief guests with the sole intention to get educated and enlightened on how to make our society progress.

Yes even from contractors or businessmen who are chief guests, let us stop expecting money from them.

Let us build our unions or organisations solely based on the donations of well wishers and not squeeze out corrupt money from Chief guests. Let us not play a part in corruption.

In continuation with the Chief guest’s topic i would like to make an appeal to the Students' Unions.

Respected Students' Unions, please invite self made successful entrepreneurs and self made businessmen as Chief guests or resource persons in your gatherings to inculcate “Dignity of Labour " in young minds. It is time Nagas stop depending on government jobs and enter every field of business because our Nagaland economy is taken over by outsiders.

The obselete trend of inviting only bureaucrats as chief guests in your gatherings is only propagating the idea that white collared jobs are the ultimate which is not healthy. Every students' gatherings, we are only exhorted to toil for government jobs which is unhealthy.

It is time for Nagas to take over our economy by inculcating “Dignity of Labour " and enter into the business fields, big or small.
