Chumoukedima, August 25 (MExN): The Chumoukedima Town Council (CTC) has introduced a "Swachh Hunters" initiative to promote a litter-free and plastic-free town. The initiative was launched on August 24 in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 and Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
The Self-Employed Women Association (SEWA), Chumoukedima, and the Chumoukedima Town Youth Organization have been notified as "Swachh Hunters" and will work to improve cleanliness and public awareness on responsible waste management. The groups will conduct regular patrols in busy areas, including NH-29 through Chumoukedima town and other major roads under the CTC, using tongs to pick up litter as a visible demonstration to residents and visitors.
They will also identify littering, overflowing bins, blocked storm-water drains, illegal dumping and garbage accumulation. Repeated violations and problem areas will be reported to the CTC office for necessary action. The initiative will include street shows and other public engagement activities aimed at encouraging behavioural change and greater awareness of individual responsibility for waste disposal.
The CTC said the initiative would operate on the philosophy of "Hate the crime, not the person", with the focus on encouraging residents and tourists to properly dispose of the waste they generate. The ADC and Executive Officer of CTC said the council's goal was to transform Chumoukedima into a spit-free and litter-free town, but added that this would require the participation of citizens and tourists.
